PAW --> Available Adult Cats --> "Sam"![]()
Name: Sam Color: Short haired Siamese X, Flame point Age: Born August, 2003 Gender: Neutered Male History: Sam was originally adopted from PAW when he was just six months old in early 2004. Even though his adopters signed a legal contract agreeing to not de-claw him for any reason, they breached their contract. Their justification was because he scratched a child in their home. De-clawing a cat will simply make the cat more fearful and if he has no claws to defend himself, he will find other ways to do it. We were very glad to have him back, but so disappointed that this little guy has to now live without his claws. Amputation of a cat's claws up to and including the first knuckle of each toe is devastating and life-changing for a cat. De-clawed cats are very aware they do not have claws and often find it particularly distressing to live with other cats. Sometimes they do quite well with a gentle dog, as Sam did in his original home. Most can find it quite difficult to adapt to change (moving, etc.). Rescue groups are well aware of the challenges that face de-clawed cats as we often get calls from people wanting to re-home a de-clawed cat that has developed behavioural issues. Personality: Because of the potential fear of other cats, we do not like putting a de-clawed cat in an adoption centre. Sam has been in a foster home since his return. In Nov '07, Sam decided to climb a book shelf and because he has no claws, he lost his foothold and fell. He tore the ligaments in one of his back legs, a very painful accident. There was no choice but to have the leg surgically repaired. Sam has recovered very nicely although confining him to a kennel for a few weeks certainly wasn't his cup of tea! Luckily, he is in a wonderful and attentive foster home and so he has received the best of care. Sam should be totally recovered by early 2008 and hopefully, he will not attempt any giant leaps ever again! If you decide that Sam could be your cat and knowing that cats love to have vertical access, it would be best to provide him with a safe, multi level cat tree to satisfy his desire to be up high. He truly is a delightful fellow and purrs with anticipation when it's his turn for loving. UPDATE ON SAM - March/08! Sam's leg has healed beautifully. He is back to his usual active, curious and playful self. Sam desperately wants to be an "only" cat -- probably due to having been de-clawed when he was a youngster. Please contact PAW if you are interested in adopting OR fostering Sam. ![]()
